... but I am not convinced I will make enough money to "make ends meet", especially this Summer when I won't have my part time job to pay the rent!!
When I have a good week with full-time hours I take home around $300. I suppose I will have to continue my scrounging ways, I almost fell back into the spending ways I had when I made regular money.
Back to oatmeal for breakfast and peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. I am going to have to get back on eBay for the summer, and spend very little. In fact, I had a great coupon for 5 free RedBox movies, and I used the last of my food stamps for the snacks. I watched these movies while I cleaned house and got ready for my next round of eBay selling!!
After seeing an amazing sunset tonight I have resolved that I need to do whatever I can to stay in Morro Bay!!

I got a job!!
Woo Hoo!! I will start an almost full-time job next Monday!! I have high hopes that I will be able to pay the bills with the amount of money they will pay me for my new job. It will start at $8.75 per hour, but will increase after 90 days of probation. I won't be working my part-time job in the Summer so I will have to make sure that I put some cash aside to use for July and August.
I am not going to report my new job to the utilities discounters until it reaches their maximum annual income figure. I am going to continue my thrifty ways into this new period of my life, because I can't afford not to.
I will still be posting more of my ideas to gather cash and spend less.
I am thanking the "powers that be" that I have a local job where I will be able to walk (saving gas) and interact daily with my community.

Selling some books ...
I recently attempted to sell some of my myriad books at the local swap meet, but met with little success. I was even told by someone that I was charging too much, that she could get the same books at the Goodwill for only $1. I felt like telling her to go buy them there, then!! At the swap meet I actually had more people ask if the bookcase was for sale than check out the books on it ...
I also tried to sell some of the books at a garage sale, where I had a bit more luck. At the garage sale (because it was windy) I left the books on the ground in a bin with their spines facing up. Don't know if this was the reason I had more success or not. Sorry for the bad pic, that was a crazy windy day and I think I couldn't focus because I was going to blow over!!
I have tried to sell books on eBay, with limited success. The best way to sell on eBay is to have a "lot" of similar books so that the shipping seems lower to the bidder. I got rid of most my decorating and crafts books this way several years ago. But, I still had some left that I ended up donating to Goodwill (perhaps that lady from the swap meet found them!!) I have several random books up for sale on a free online storefront (BluJay.com), but they have sat there for 2 years now. I will try some of the better books from my group on eBay this week again to see how they sell.
So, when I heard about an online site (Cash4Books.net) where I could enter my ISBN numbers and they would tell me if they would buy my book, I was excited. Surely with all my books there would be several that they would buy!! NOT!! I searched over 30 ISBNs, including a couple of audio books, and only TWO books came up indicating that they would buy them. Of course they offered me more than I would probably get at a garage sale, so I went through the motions. They offer free shipping (Media Mail), that is a great thing because I wouldn't have been able to afford to ship the books to them for the amount they were offering me.
The two books they purchased were newer books with the ISBN-13 only, so I figured that was why they were interested in these two. However, I tried some others with ISBN-13s and they didn't want those either. So, I was able to get $4.58 for two books (one SciFi reprint and a book about Egyptology). I will mail off the box tomorrow (with their paid shipping label), and they will send me some money via PayPal (they offered the option of a check or PayPal). I hope all will go smoothly, but they could always reject the books once they have them, or pay less for them than quoted. I will let you know when I have my $4.58 in my PayPal account!!

Beloved Collectibles Must Go!!
I have collected annual sterling silver snowflake ornament sets since the late 1990s, buying back issues when I found them at a reasonable price. Over the years I have added more and more company's lines to my collection until I began to run out of room. About 5 years ago I winnowed my collection down to five lines that I couldn't live without!!
A couple years after that when I was downsizing for my move into a cottage I decided to let a couple more lines go. I put the Lenox crystal and sterling line up on an online storefront and was able to sell only one. I had two more waiting in my garage for someone to fall in love with them or desire the first and second in the series.
Up until last month I had four lines that I wanted to keep. Of course with my financial issues I had to find a way to make some quick cash. I decided to "retire" a complete set of eleven Wallace sterling silver ornaments from the "Grand Baroque" line. This was so difficult, but I really had no choice.
Given my limited success with selling these ornaments online, I decided to call the company where I had purchased the snowflakes new. Sterling Collectables also sells ornaments from previous years to collectors, and I hoped I could get a good offer. I was pleased that they would offer me $400 for my 13 ornaments. I wouldn't have gotten as much as I did if I hadn't kept them in pristine condition, with their original boxes, paperwork, red satin ribbon, and anti-tarnish pouch. I hope I won't have to sell off my three remaining lines (Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gorham, and Towle) of ornaments, but I am thankful that they purchased my ornaments, it was a nice Valentine's Day present.

Golden State Advantage aka "Food Stamps"
I was talking with the Department of Social Services representative at my local One-Stop center and she told me the good news. When I was first laid off I called DSS to see if I qualified for any of the programs. The only one I might have qualified for was "food stamps", but because I owned my car and had both a retirement account and a pension I was not qualified. However, starting in February 2011 they are no longer counting "property" towards your eligibility for services.
So, I visited my local DSS office and filled out some paperwork last week. I had an appointment yesterday, had to fill out more paperwork, get my photo taken, get my fingerprints taken, and watch a video of the services offered. They sent me home with my "Golden State Advantage" card, which is like a debit card. This morning I checked and $80 had been loaded on the card, so I hurried off to buy some food.
I am ashamed to say that I decided not to use my regular grocery store for my first use of my EBT card, afraid of the stigma I guess. I went to a local discount grocery store (Cookie Crock) and gathered some different categories of food, which was challenging as I was not given guidelines of which food was eligible and which was not. I grabbed some produce, some junk food, some canned food, a cooked chicken, bread, cheese, and some soda pop. When I went through the register the guys helped me out with the process of checking out. They were so respectful and helpful. Luckily there was no one behind me in line because I was a bit slow learning which buttons to choose, etc. I appreciate the patience of the register guys.
Turned out that most of the food, including the junk food and soda, was eligible for the card. However, I was surprised to find that the cooked chicken was not eligible. Apparently, prepared hot food is not covered. I found an FDA site that explains which food is covered and which is not. One interesting item on this list is "energy drinks", apparently if there is a nutritional label it is covered but if there is no nutritional label it is considered a supplement and is not covered.
Although I am thankful that I was approved for a monthly food stamps allowance of $87.00, I am upset that no one gave me a pamphlet about how to use the card, perhaps it is "in the mail". I could easily have purchased my own chicken and cooked it at home, that would have saved me almost $6 in cash.
Follow-up: For people who are new to the "EBT" card, each store has a different process for using the card. I have used it at 4 stores and they are all different. I am almost used to having to announce, or having the register announce, to the whole store that I am using food stamps!! Today, because I had less on my card than the amount of the purchase, it rejected my card. I had to take it to the special register where they could check my balance first and then process only that amount!! The computer should know that, right? If I had been in a regular line instead of the self-checkout line I would have held up the line and everyone would have known why. This is not right!! So not only do I have to learn several different processes for using the card, I also have to keep in mind how much is left on the card and not go over or it will be rejected and I will have to be embarrassed yet again, ARGGGGHH!!
Another Follow-up: So, I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting at the beginning of my second month for my next installment of food stamps. I called each day to see if the balance was $87.00, and finally pressed the right sequence of numbers to get to a list of topics that might answer my questions. Of course I never had the option of speaking to a live person!! The bottom line was that the date your food stamps funds are added to your card is the last number of your claim. Of course mine is "9", so I have to wait until the 9th of the month to get my food stamps cash on my card. See, this is why there should have been a packet mailed to me explaining all of this. I feel like I was sent out into the ocean with a paddle with no boat!!
Yet another Follow-up: Sometime last weekend I realized that I had been waiting for the quarterly report to come in the mail, or at least an email with a link to the report. I did some online searching and it turns out that I was supposed to turn it in the first week of the month, and it was considered late by the second week of the month. I went into the office in town this morning and got quite frustrated. The gal who was helping me was a bit rude to me while she was helping me figure out the problem. Apparently, they had me registered as homeless because the only address they had in their records was my P.O. Box!! Of course, they have it noted in my record that I pay rent and utilities, so I don't know how that happened. She went off to get my quarterly report form and when she came back she told me that there was a glitch in the system and they had me as not needing to do a quarterly report. OK, so the report she gave me starts next month. I was asking her lots of questions about the process, since no one ever explained this process to me, and she copped an attitude. I lost it and stormed out telling her that it was hard enough to come in this office in the first place, and that she was not dealing with this situation well. If they had given me a proper orientation in the first place this would not have been a problem. I am hoping that because I will be filling this out and turning it in the following month that I will get a reprieve from any income I have starting next month. One of the good things is that they don't stop benefits during a quarter.

Selling Gold, Silver, and Gemstones
With the current high price of gold I decided to gather up all my stray scraps of gold, as well as some un-used gold chains. I also gathered my extra silver and loose gemstones. I packaged them into little baggies and created a numbered spreadsheet of the items. I had read that you should shop around to find the best offer for your items, so I decided to check with my local family-owned jewelry shop (Gold Tree Jewelers), a pawn shop (Atascadero Jewelry & Loan), and an estate jewelry shop (Hamilton Estate Jewelry) to see who could give me the most for my gold.
I called ahead of time to see if they could quote me a standard price and I had mixed results. The jewelry shop asked me to bring in my items to have them check them out. The pawn shop hemmed and hawed about the price, saying that I should bring in my pieces. The estate jewelry shop told me $15 a gram for "clean" gold, that meant gold chains with no solder. While I had them on the phone I asked if I needed an appointment, and all of the shops said I could stop by and they could help me if there were not a lot of people in the shops. I also asked if there was a fee for the evaluation process. The jewelry shop and the pawn shop said there was no fee. The estate jewelry shop indicated that if the evaluation process took a long time there would be a fee. He explained that people often bring in a bunch of items for evaluation and then they don't sell them. Basically, it is an assurance that people don't use him for a free appraisal. I had a feeling that I would be selling to him so I decided to save his evaluation for last.
The local jewelry store had a constant flow of random neighborhood people with purchases or repairs. I realized that they were doing me a favor and was very patient. She had calculated the exchange rate at a bit more then $10 per gram, and was frustrated that the estate jewelry shop had quoted me $15. I told her that I wished that they could pay more for the gold, because I would much rather use them. She was willing to buy a couple of the chains outright as jewelry and gave me a quote. She checked if my stray post earrings were diamonds, until the meter broke (they weren't!!) She also recommended that I check out the antique shop up the street (Mikkelson's Antiques) to see if they would be interested in purchasing my vintage items, some of which were incomplete. I did go by the shop but the buyer was not there. I will check back later.
I checked out the pawn shop next, it was the first time I visited a pawn shop. I couldn't believe how many items were for sale!! I know where I would go if I needed to buy some used jewelry. They also offered me $10 per gram. The owner was friendly and spent some time showing me some of the jewelry while we chatted and I picked his brain. It was worth checking out the pawn shop, now I know where it is and what type of items are for sale there.
I finally ended up at the estate jewelry shop. He ended up giving me $12 a gram because it was not "clean" and there were some 10K pieces in the mix. I couldn't believe how much I got for the scrap gold, about $150!! The full 18K gold necklace brought me $100, and the extra chains brought about $50. He told me that it would cost about $25 to evaluate the rest of my stuff, apparently even if the stones are not actual gemstones they might still be set in gold. He also gave me a $50 quote on a vintage watch if he bought it as gold. He buys silver, which the other shops don't, and so I will most likely take the items back to his shop for an evaluation and sell the remaining items to him. He said that the loose gemstones are not saleable, that if there was one in the gold it would "go into the melt". If I really have some gemstones I will have them removed and will save them anyway, I can't imagine sacrificing them "to the melt"!! I still need to check out the coin guy in town to see how much I could get for my silver coins, I have heard that they are worth more as silver because they are 90% silver.

Sweepstakes, Raffles, and Contests -- Oh My!!
People often ignore the constant bombardment of offers for sweepstakes, contests, raffles, and the like. These opportunities abound and most of us just ignore them. Now that I am trying to make ends meet I am taking advantage of all of these opportunities. I have even set up a separate email to use for this purpose so I don't accidentally end up with a ton of unsolicited emails to my main account.
I always check the bottom of my receipts to see if there is a weekly sweepstakes. Most grocery stores have these sweepstakes, free in exchange for a short survey. I haven't won one yet, but I figure most people don't participate so one day I will win. Another grocery store in my neighborhood runs a weekly $100 raffle. All you have to do it add your name and phone number to the bin after your store transaction. Keep your eyes open for receipts that people toss, you can use their code to enter the sweepstakes. My grocery store allows one entry per day.
If you belong to any Internet groups or blogs, especially if they are bargain-related, they often run contests. The Best Western Facebook site has a contest every Tuesday where you guess the location in the picture. I won it once and got a $25 Staples gift card!! Another blog I follow has contests all the time. One time recently all I had to do was post on the blog and I won $20 Target gift card.
It definitely pays to pay attention to signs and any boxes that are on the counter at stores. One thing you can do is make up some address labels with your name and contact information to stick to the ticket. That way you don't even have to write anything down.

This Nickel can make a real difference ...
After paying my bills today I picked up my mail. I had to laugh at this mailing from the American Diabetes Association. They are right, "this nickel can make a real difference", but in this case for me!! I know that they hope that I will donate money towards a "cure", but unfortunately I have no choice but to keep this nickel for myself. This nickel is going straight into my "Casita de Loose Change"!!
P.S. When I opened this envelope they included some free return-address labels as well!! What a deal ...
Follow-up: Today I got another one of these, one more nickel for the "Casita de Loose Change" and some more address labels to use when I ship all my eBay items!!

Credit Card Rewards Programs and Robbing Peter to Pay Paul
What a day, so far I have paid three bills and have realized that I am really in a bind. I have only $215.43 left in my account and I have to pay my credit card bill of $401.17. That means to cover this credit card payment I need to come up with $185.74 today!!
When I closed out my Chase checking accounts last week the banker told me that I could get some cash back from my credit card Ultimate Rewards program. I had 22,528 points and he recommended that I go online to redeem the points as cash. I assumed that I would be able to apply $200 towards my credit card payment. Surprise, they are mailing me a $225 check that should arrive in 3 weeks!! Even if I had gone online last week to do this I would still have had to come up with some cash to cover the shortfall.
So, now I have to scrounge around to find enough cash to cover that payment. After rent and my storage unit payment I will have about $75.00 in my other checking account, plus about $300 in savings. I really didn't want to get into that savings, it seemed so safe and secure. I also still have $1000 in traveler's checks that I keep for total emergencies, and I am hoping to not have to use that at all. I have a bit of cash on hand, but don't want to use that for bill-paying. What am I going to do?
I can either transfer some savings into my checking account and deposit the check when it arrives next month. Or, I can deposit some traveler's checks into my online bill-paying account and buy more traveler's checks with the check when it arrives next month. Of course there are fees involved in purchasing traveler's checks (or cards), so that is definitely a concern. I think I will go ahead and transfer money from my savings account to my checking account in order to cover the credit card bill this month and plan on depositing the check there when it arrives.
Some other points-earning accounts I have include Best Western and my Bank of America credit card. I checked and the Best Western points cannot be converted to cash. Interestingly, the Bank of America credit card rewards program does not pay out cash as high as the Chase credit card program does. In fact, for the same amount of points I would have gotten exactly half what I did with Chase. So, perhaps it would be better for me to see if there is any merchandise they offer for the points rather than take a cash payout. My third credit card did not have a rewards option.
I totally understand the old adage of "robbing Peter to pay Paul", because that is exactly what I have to do. At least I haven't yet reached the point where I am spending money I don't have!!
Follow-up: I was ecstatic to get my checks in the mail earlier than expected!! I immediately deposited them back into my savings account.

Do I need the Sunday Paper??
My Sunday morning tradition has been to stop by The Dollar Tree and purchase the Sunday paper. Then I head over to my favorite Mexican restaurant, Maya in North Morro Bay, and order the chicken fajitas, a salad with blue cheese dressing, and a Coke/Sprite mixed soda. I peruse the day's news while I dine and people-watch. However, today I realized that I will have to limit even this simple tradition if I will be able to afford to stay in Morro Bay.
The paper, not surprisingly at the Dollar Tree, costs a dollar (+ tax). Of course, whenever I shop at the Dollar Tree store I always find other items that I just can't live without!! This morning I also purchased a bottle of body wash, a spray bottle, a bottle of Mello Yellow, and a bag of tortilla chips (for my meal leftovers). Add the gas to get to the store and the restaurant, plus $21 for the meal, I can't continue to do this weekly.
As I read my paper today I realized that I recycle most of the paper without even reading it. I used to use the TV Listings, but now I check out the live listings on the Charter site. I read only a couple of the articles in the paper, some of which are listed in the email updates I now get from the SLO Tribune. I found the weekly Dear Abby and the Heloise columns online, as well as the Parade insert. I don't think I would actually seek those out on a daily or weekly basis, but it is nice to know I can find them for free!!
Most of the ads I don't care about, but I found an online ad for Rite-Aid, the only chain store in Morro Bay. If I know I will be working my part-time job on the coming weekend I can check out the K-Mart and Target online ads, because I know I can stop in Atascadero and Paso Robles on my way North. I am on the Staples emailing list, which send out their weekly ads, and I can find them directly online if I need to check out their prices.
I do check out the coupon circulars, but I only cut out 4-5 coupons from each. I found some online sites for the coupon circulars (Redplum and Smart Source) and can go there any time I need some current coupons. The Tightwad Gazette blog helps people find amazing bargains and I will check it out when I need additional coupons for products.
I will miss eating at Maya, though. Their morning crew on Sunday recognizes me as a "regular" and they know what my order is without me even having to tell them!! I also like to support local business when I can. I think the key words here are "when I can". Right now I can't, I have no money!! I want to stay in Morro Bay!! I will miss the great food at Maya. I will even miss the "holy-rollers" who congregate here after services on Sunday, they provide a wonderful people-watching opportunity. However, knowing that I can save almost $25 a week ($100 a month) by not buying my Sunday paper and reading it at the restaurant will make me feel better, and will hopefully go a long way toward allowing me to STAY IN MORRO BAY!!

My "Casita de Loose Change"!!
Last week I decided to cancel my Chase checking accounts because they are no longer free. They offered several methods to get around the fee, but since I am unemployed and have no money I did not qualify. I checked around town and, although there were several local banks who offered free checking, I decided to choose Wells Fargo.
Wells Fargo Bank is national, is conveniently located in my grocery store, and offers a method to get around the fees. By setting up a checking and a savings account they will automatically transfer $25 from checking to savings each month. I chose the lower transfer amount because, again, I have no money!! If I get a job later I can upgrade to the $75 transfer amount and get free cashier's checks and money orders. I had to scrape together $200 to open the accounts, and those funds had to stay in the account for 24 hours. I will have to pay about $20 for the checks, so am hoping that I can manage to pay all my bills online and use my free debit card for other transactions. That way I might be able to get away with having no checks for this account. I have another "free for life" checking account from Bank of the West, but unfortunately that bank is not located in my area. That account is where my paychecks will be deposited, and I will use that account to pay the other bills. Although the Bank of the West account is free, there is a monthly fee to use the debit card.
As my free gift for opening my Wells Fargo account I was given a darling little savings bank, called a "Casita". I was going to give it to my niece, but yesterday I realized that perhaps I need it more than she does!! I decided that I would put all of my "silver" coins into the bank, who knows when I might need a quick cache of cash? So, today my wallet is poorer by 3 quarters, 3 nickels, and 5 dimes -- and my Casita is $1.40 richer!!
Follow-up: Yesterday I had to break into the "Casita de Loose Change" because I had to go to the laundromat. I was surprised to find that I had $8.00 worth of quarters, and about $2.50 in dimes and nickels!! My washing machine broke and since I will have to go to the laundromat often, I will have to set up a different receptacle for my quarters. Only dimes and nickels will go into the casita from now on!!

I want to Stay in Morro Bay!!
Two and a half years ago I moved to Morro Bay, California. I took early retirement from my 20-year job and accepted a position in San Luis Obispo. I knew I wanted to retire to Morro Bay and thought that it would be great to move down to the Central Coast so I could be familiar with the area and make some new friends. Unfortunately, that job didn't work out, I was let go after 3 months.
I realize now that the woman who recommended that I be let go was correct, even though her motivations may have been misguided. I was not suited for that job. At the time, however, I was devastated!! In my 35 years of working I had never even had a mediocre review, much less a bad review followed by being "let go". It was a surprise, even though that morning I had a moment of prescience as I headed out the door of my cottage. I had thought, "What if I get laid off, what would I have to remember to take with me from my office?" It was a strange thought and even at the time I thought it could have been a premonition. Sure enough, that day I was called into the big bosses office and was told that he had to let me go. He wanted me to stay until the end of the week, but I was too emotional and knew I couldn't stay. In tears, I packed up my office and left then and there.
Most of my coworkers were shocked at how I was let go, and I did have some support from one of them in particular who snuck back in my office to retrieve some personal items I had forgotten!! It was comical as we went back and forth leaving each other messages, trying to arrange when and where we should meet so she could give me my "stuff", like some illicit drug exchange!! I appreciated her support at a time when I was still in shock. Right after it happened I wasn't comfortable telling people that I had been "let go", so I let people think I had been "laid off". At the time it sounded better, but over time I have changed my wording to be more accurate. The only negative thing for me now is that I have to say that I was "let go" on my job applications.
The first thing I did that day was to drive over to my storage unit and retrieve all the boxes of stuff I had been planning to sell after I got "settled" in Morro Bay. I had been selling through eBay for many years, but when I revisited their site I realized that their policies had changed so much that their site was no longer a viable place for low-end sellers like me. So, I did a bit of research and discovered some free online storefronts. I decided to list my modern items on BluJay and my vintage items on eCrater. It made me feel like I was doing something proactive towards my unemployed situation.
Of course, after I did a bit of research, I applied for Unemployment Insurance. I lucked out that I was awarded the maximum weekly benefit because they based the figure on my previous job. I was also lucky that I hadn't quit my part-time job when I got the San Luis Obispo position. I had been commuting up to the San Francisco Bay Area every other weekend for a high-paying part-time position. This part-time position enabled me to continue to stretch out my Unemployment Insurance for 2 years at the highest weekly award while I have been job-hunting in my field.
I have lived somewhat frugally over the last two years, but I recently began my third Unemployment Insurance claim and they are now only using my part-time work to calculate my weekly benefit amount. My current weekly benefit amount is only $150, and I will only get that during a week when I am not working my part-time job. The bottom line is that while my part-time job will give me enough to pay my rent, it is not enough to pay the bills!!
And, I want to Stay in Morro Bay!! I love it here, I am happy here, it is beautiful here. Unfortunately, there are almost no job opportunities in my field here in San Luis Obispo County. At almost 50 years old I don't want to move home with my parents, although I totally appreciate that I have that option. I moved home with them in my mid-thirties and went crazy. I was able to get somewhat out of debt after a year and a half, but I had gained 25 pounds and many stress-related health issues. I couldn't get out of there fast enough once I was relatively solvent.
So, after seeing this incredible sunset this evening I decided that I WANT TO STAY IN MORRO BAY!! This blog will follow my journey of trying to find money to pay the bills, find a job, hopefully getting out of debt again, AND be able to stay in Morro Bay!!
